REDUCING ELECTRIC VEHICLE NOISE CAN BE ACHIEVED THROUGH UPGRADES TO MORE QUIET WHEELS, AND ADDING NOISE-DAMPENING INSULATION BEHIND THE INNER FENDERS

Soundproofing fenders and chassis is costly and does not reduce the source of the noise.

The greatest effect is achieved by using tires that emit as little noise as possible on coarse asphalt. Summer tires with a soft tire casing and medium-hard summer rubber provide the lowest measurement results on a Tesla Model Y. Not the EU value that is measured outside the car on the roadside.

Some winter tires also have their advantages with softer rubber that in itself dampens road noise. However, some winter tires emit a lot of noise if the tire tread pattern has a small degree of longitudinal tire tread. We have some winter tires that can actually be recommended as all-season tires.

We measure the internal noise in the car with a noise meter at 70, 75, or 80 km/h, depending on the car model we measure, thus eliminating other noise sources. The potential for improvement is 1 - 5 dB, depending on which tire one is coming from. The so far measurably quietest Winrun R330 W-Silent can give a 5 dB gain compared to a hard sports tire, (marked SPORT on this website), in addition to better longevity (Treadwear 420 versus sports tires at 240), and significantly less tracking. Hankook has also made a good original tire for Model Y, but Winrun still measures slightly better on both noise and lifespan. Tracking is also slightly less on Model Y.

It is likely that the measurements we have done on Tesla Model Y are transferable to other electric vehicles with a similar weight and wheel size.

NOISE-DAMPENING THICK HUB RING MILLED INTO THE RIM

The hub ring also has a protective function that counteracts corrosion between the aluminium rim and the steel hub. This is a service that costs NOK 1590 for 4 rims, in low season + mounting and dismounting of tyres. Not many people choose such an expensive solution, but several of us at Megahjul drive on rims with thick hub rings, both to reduce 1-2 dB of rumble noise measured inside the car, and also to reduce corrosion between rim and hub, which in the long term can cause slack and imbalance in the wheel.

The Frigus EV Ice 3 tyre has full drainage, extreme durability, and is the quietest winter tyre we have measured to date. If you only drive in the Nordic countries where the road surface is below the tyre's working temperature of 35 degrees, you can use this tyre all year round. If you drive briskly at times and demand that the car does not float in turns, then do not choose this tyre, but for "cruising" this tyre is recommended as all-season tyre.
