TESLA MODEL Y WHEELS AND WINTER TIRES
LIGHTWEIGHT WHEELS REVOLUTIONISE THE TESLA MODEL Y, WITH FRIGUS EV ICE 3 TIRES BOOSTING THE CAR’S RANGE
TESLA STATES 32 KM RANGE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE 19 AND 20 INCH WHEELS
Tesla states that the difference in range between original 19'' and 20'' wheels is approx. 32 km, and the weight difference is approx. 1 kg/wheel, i.e. 4 kilograms in total. It shows the difference in energy consumption when a rim is both heavier and the rim ring is slightly longer in radius.
Another important factor is that the Tesla Model Y Long Range exterior has a low payload, see the table below. Recommended lighter wheel configurations with lighter rims not only increase the range but also the car's payload. It is important that you don't have a lot of inconvenience if an accident happens in winter, because fines and reductions in the insurance settlement can be a downside here.

TESLA MODEL Y PERFORMANCE IS EQUIPPED WITH 21 '' STAGGERED FROM DEALER, BUT WE THINK MOST SKILLED DRIVERS WANT 18" OR 19" CONFIGURATION WITH SIMILAR FRONT/REAR WHEELS
In this article, we’ll be exploring the world of wheels and how they perform on EVs like the Tesla Model Y and YP. The Tesla Model Y has been a long-awaited addition to the European car market, and it’s finally arrived on our shores. The Model Y comes factory-equipped with wheel dimensions of either 19x19.5 and 255/45R19 tires, or 20x9.5 with 255/40R20 tires. The STRO (Scandinavian Tire and Rim Organisation) and our own in-house team recommend wheel dimensions of 19x8.5 or 20x9 respectively, and with good reason. Narrow wheels mean less weight, and having an appropriate rim width relative to your tires prevents you from driving on, and potentially damaging, the edge of the rim. To comply with EU regulations on wheel configuration, we recommend ET35 to ET40 for a better look with more outward-facing wheels.
All ZAX Wheels are approved for the EU-market and each wheel application comes with homologation certifcation passing JLW / VIA standards
We have frequently questions from customers in Germany, Austria and Switzerland about TÜV or ECE certificates for ZAX Wheels, but the rules in the EU is minimum homologation certification passing JLW / VIA standars, same as the global rules. These standards makes us capable to upgrade the ZAX Wheels for EVs with less weight, to improve range and acceleration for electrical cars.
TO AVOID TIRES LOSING TRACTION ON WET ROAD SURFACES, ENERGY REQUIREMENTS INCREASE SUBSTANTIALLY. WE RECOMMEND THE FRIGUS EV ICE 3 - THE WORLD'S FIRST OPTIMISED ELECTRIC CAR TIRE.
As surface water can lift a car off the surface of the road – a phenomenon known as aquaplaning -, it’s easy to see why so much energy is required of the front tires to push through the surface water on wet asphalt. Click on the picture to learn more about the tire.
ROTATIONAL MASS PLAYS A KEY ROLE IN EV WHEELS, INCLUDING THE TESLA MODEL Y
In the world of motorsports and biking, it’s common knowledge that wheels should be as light as possible with as large a radius as possible. Though the differences in weight between different tire brands may seem almost imperceptible, these differences can have a significant impact on the wheels. Forged wheels weigh less than cast wheels, and rotary forged cast wheels offer the simplest way to reduce the base weight of the wheel. The wheels used in motorsports have a significantly smaller radius than the Tesla Model Y, and for each kilogram of wheel weight shed, there’s a reduction of roughly 7 HP in energy consumption. The wheels of the Tesla Model Y have a much larger radius, thereby saving 10-11 HP of energy for each kilogram shed, with even larger energy savings if the weight is shed exclusively in the outer rim.

18 INCH WHEELS TESTED ON THE MODEL Y AND MODEL Y PERFORMANCE. A GREAT SOLUTION FOR MORE RANGE AND COMFORT.
Watch the video below by TeslaBjørn in which he rates the Model Y fitted with 235/55R18 Winrun tires on super lightweight ZAX Turbin X wheels. We have some great 18 inch winter tires for the Tesla Model Y. The use of 18 inch wheels over the 19 inch OE Tesla Model Y wheels results in savings of 5kg, reducing energy consumption by 50 HP under normal driving conditions. See our recommendations on this site.
TESLA MODEL Y WINTER WHEELS WHICH INCREASE COMFORT AND RANGE
Many people miss the air suspension on the Model Y and want similar comfort. Then 18-inch super-light wheels are the closest solution. Higher tire profile provides significantly smoother driving experience. Lighter wheels give less impact in the wheel position in bumps, and lower wheel weight gives less noise and lower energy consumption.
TESLA MODEL Y WITH 18 INCH WHEELS ARE ALMOST LIKE SUSPENSIONS. SIGNIFICANTLY BETTER RANGE IN ADDITION TO LOWER WHEEL NOISE

WIDE, LARGE WINTER WHEELS ACCUMULATE A LOTS OF INNER DIRT DURING THE WINTER
Dense turbine wheels accumulate large amounts of dirt during the winter, especially on the rear wheels. It’s common to wash out 1-2kg of compounded layers of mud that are unevenly distributed around the wheel, resulting in weight imbalances. Wheels with more open spokes make it easier to scrape off the dirt from the outside. The OE wheels on the Tesla Model Y need to be removed in order to clean out the gathered dirt, ideally two or three times per winter season.
We’ve listed some comparisons between the OE Tesla wheels and the ZAX Wheels that we recommend for the Tesla Model Y. Take a look at the comparison between the 19 inch wheels below. You’ll find our recommendation on the optimal width of the rim based on the size of the tire as well as the car itself. The wheel’s offset will remain the appropriate value and the centre of the wheel will be in the same position as the OE. Some people believe that having wider rims will change the position of the sidewall, but that isn’t the case. See the calculations and the circumferential difference by clicking on the schematic image below. There, you can also see pictures of the sidewall position of our recommendations in relation to the originals.

ZAX GFORCE WHEELS OFFER A “TECHNICAL STEP FORWARD” FOR THE TESLA MODEL Y, IMPROVING THE CAR’S ATTRIBUTES
The ZAX GForce rims are rotary forged with a super lightweight sports design, providing optimal ventilation to the brakes while being easy to clean throughout the entire winter season.
The rims will come to market in the first quarter of 2022 and are now available for preorder at discounted prices. The first shipment of rims may sell out before hitting the shelves, so order early to avoid disappointment. We have a range of distributors all over the EU, some of which are buying in bulk straight from the factories.
